Sunday Reflection: The gift of motherhood
It’s a day to celebrate mothers, at least that is what we are told.
Perhaps we’ve spent days dreaming up the pamperings we crave and thinking upon the sacrifices our role demands of us.
But I invite you to this gentle reminder, my friend.
Perhaps on Mother’s Day morning, you won’t wake to breakfast in bed, but do you have little ones to wake? Some do not.
Perhaps this Mother’s Day you find yourself nearing the end of a pregnancy and achy from the extra weight you carry. Some ache for that very same feeling because the life inside was snuffed before it could even be felt.
Perhaps on this Mother’s Day, you had extra messes to care for and the toddler missed his nap and you’re just oh, so weary from it all. Find comfort today in the arms of Jesus and perhaps too in remembering that some sit in silence aching for the sound of children.
Perhaps on this Mother’s Day, you don’t hear a single thank you, but remember your work is not done merely for them but for a God who sees it all and rejoices over every small sacrifice you make.
Perhaps at the end of the day you crawl into bed with exhaustion unsure of how to meet a new day, but there are those who find themselves in a season of wandering because motherhood has not been given to them when they expected.
Motherhood is hard. Motherhood costs everything. Motherhood is sacrificial, holy work and requires a strength only Jesus can give.
But Motherhood is a gift. On the hardest of days it is sometimes good to remember that though it is hard, we are blessed to have the hard and the accompanying joy than to not have motherhood at all.
And perhaps by taking a day to reflect on the gift of motherhood, you and I can find the gift that we all need the most on a day like today. Because gratitude always brings with it the truest form of joy. Joy is a gift, and it’s given to those who take the hard and disciplined road of practicing gratitude in even the hardest of seasons.
Walking with you my friend,
Amanda
