It feels like every other living soul out there in this world knows just exactly how they are meant to spend their whole life, and somehow I’m still just a lost child wandering around in the dark.
...at least that’s what I’ve told a few of my friends in recent conversations.
And yet, I laugh at the simple fact that just about every single friend I've said this to resonates with how I feel.
We all have the deep desire to know what we’re meant to do. We want the clarity that a calling seems to promise.
But maybe somewhere along the way our idea of a calling in life has gotten a little off.
So, if you’re among the group that is feeling lost, can I share a quick word with you?
First off, our calling has already been made crystal clear to us...
...and I forget this daily.
It really is simple though. You and I are called to love our Lord God with every ounce of our being. We’re called to love those around us, and serve them in every way that we can. And I know you're thinking, "Sure Amanda, but what are we supposed to do with our lives?"
Well, maybe that alone is enough to keep us busy our whole lives.
We’re called to bear fruit.
We’re called to live in awe and worship.
We’re called to share Good News with the lost.
We’re called to train up those younger than us in the ways of Christ.
Do you see it yet? This is meant to be our life long pursuit. Our calling has been made clear to each one of us.
Second, Rather than spending our time in search of a "calling" let's invest our efforts in living faithfully.
You’ve been placed where you are for a specific plan and purpose. We are each placed in this spot for today, so let’s learn to invest ourselves. Dig deep into where your feet are placed and find the ways that you can make an impact for Christ.
We miss so many opportunities when our gaze is stuck only on the future, without an eye on the present.
And third, let’s be willing and ready to live a life that’s different than what we had in mind.
Sometimes we can convince ourselves that our calling is really just our greatest desire.
I've been there, done that. ("Of course I'm called to travel the world and visit every country and experience every culture, fueled by the best coffee and Asian food this world has to offer, and with my darling, adorable little family as my companions, that later goes on to live life happily ever after. Can I get an amen?")
Remember that we serve a God whose ways aren’t our own. He sees the grander picture-the beautiful masterpiece that He’s been painting all along. Trust the artist to do what He does best, and that means we’ll have to take more than a few steps that are far beyond our comfort zone.
Today we’re called to honor Christ.
Today we’re called to seek Him above all else.
This is our calling, so let’s walk forward trusting our God who promises to direct each and every step.
