We are told that God is light, and yet do we comprehend what the reality of light means for our sin-sick hearts?
Light brings the absence of darkness. It can’t possibly contain any hidden motives that are set to destroy you. There are no corners for our darkest secrets to pile up, and no shame for you and I to hide away in.
You were made for the light.
But how often we choose instead to live in our destructive darkness.
We grasp it and cling to it as if it’s some sort of covering, thinking that if we could just manage to stay within the shadows our sin would be out of others view-perhaps even out of God’s view. And this is the very deepest kind of lie.
There in our darkness is where our shame has free reign. It’s the place where lies call out to us by our own name. It’s a place where the bitterness piles up and the road we walk has us in a constant state of stumbling.
But friend, here’s the question for us- why are we still walking in darkness, holding to it so desperately, when we’ve been given the freedom to walk within the very purest light?
Why hide it all away and why choose to live inside our constant mistakes and the shame that they bring, when we’ve been offered a place of victory in the presence of our King?
Perhaps it’s because we are afraid of being fully seen. We think we can hide away our shame and our deadly mistakes, but the truth of it all is that freedom isn’t found in the dark corners of our hearts. The truest form of freedom always comes when we let every part of our sin-sick hearts be exposed for what they truly are-a heart that’s desperately in need of a loving Saviors saving grace.
Not exposed to be ridiculed. Not exposed to be shamed. But exposed to be liberated. Exposed to be cleansed.
When we choose to live in darkness we cut ourselves off from the greatest gift we’ve been given-fellowship with our Father and fellowship with one another.
Oh, if we would simply open ourselves to the pure, searching light of our perfect and holy God how quickly we realize that this is where the greatest joy can be found, in knowing that our hearts are fully seen and yet somehow still fully loved.
You were made for the light.
We walk in to the light when we live in daily repentance. Not driven by shame, but propelled forward with the realization that the more light we receive the more freedom we can grasp.
We walk in to the light by forcing our eyes wide open, breaking the habit of turning a blind eye towards or own sin. For if a single day were to pass me by without some form of repentance, it is never due to my lack of sin, but simply the reality of my blindness to my own sin.
To be blind to our sin is just another fragment of our old habit of living within the dark.
We walk forward in the light when humility becomes our way of life, and daily dependence on God is the only way we can see to move forward.
May we be among those who leave behind the shadows, those who are no longer content to simply sit within our quiet shame. Instead may we be among those who fully embrace the reality of being fully seen, fully known, and fully loved as the light of our holy God radiates within each one of us.
(I created a lock screen to be used as a reminder of these truths.)
