A Needed Sorrow

One of my favorite passages of scripture is found in 1 Peter...

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you...In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials."

"If need be."

These three little words hold so much weight.

Do you understand the depths of their meaning? The beauty that they hold to a hurting and sorrow filled heart?

Your trials? Well, they don't come without deep thought and careful guidance of your Father who loves you perfectly.

He knows you through and through. Better than you'll ever know yourself. Can you write down what each day ahead holds? I didn't think so. And yet, He can. He knows it all!

Your sorrows aren't meant to break you into nothing, but rather, to build you into something. Something this world so desperately needs to behold-a reflection of the very God of this universe.

He only lets them through His hands when He knows that they'll serve a purpose greater than if He were to do without. He lets the weight of them rest heavy on your shoulders, so that you'll understand what it is to have that burden lifted when you let go of your own efforts.

He's teaching you, and making you, and shaping you, to be just what you're meant to be. And His ever-faithful hand and all-gracious heart will never once let you walk with the weight of sorrow alone.

This trial that makes you feel like you're in over your head? Well, it's going to teach you something you couldn't have learned without these moments of pain. These struggles you trying so hard to get through? Well, they're gonna teach you something that He knew you just couldn't do without.

Because you know what?

Your Father doesn't waste a single sorrow; not a single moment of pain. He only lets them into your life when He knows that it will be just what you need.

Remember? "If need be."

He weighs it all out. He sees what's coming next. He knows what it will take to prepare you and He graciously, gives you all that you need during those times of pain, to not just make it through, but to reach the end with victory.

Yes, He may allow it, but never for you to bear it on your own. He patiently waits for you to come to Him and let Him bear it for you-the whole, entire weight of it.

So when you're in those times of hurt; those times of pain, know it's purpose and what's meant to be gained. It's going to be worth it. Just bring it back to His all knowing hands.

And when you read those verses in 1 Peter don't forget the verses that come before all of the sorrow and pain. You have a living hope, that no human sorrow or human hurt can ever touch.

You have an inheritance that nothing in this world can strip from you. It's yours. Promised. Guaranteed. And it will be worth even an entire lifetime of hurt, but especially the sorrows you walking through right now.
