Doing What We Ought

Say we're sitting across from each other right now and I ask you the question, "Do you want a stronger walk with Christ?" What would your answer be?

Most likely, if you're reading this post the answer would be an easy "Ah, yes. Don't we all?" So, here's my next question for you. Does your desire match your doing?

We have so many desires. We have so many wishes. We wish our prayer lives were stronger, our times in the Word more consistent, our phones used a little less. We wish we knew how to do this or that, and had the time to learn something new. We make excuses for why we're not fighting against the wrong in this world or sharing truth with those who are lost.

We are so good at making excuses.

Let me ask you this now, when is the last time you ate? When is the last time you scrolled through Facebook? When is the last time you visited with a friend or watched a show?

Here's my final question, how badly do you want all of those things you say you want?

The truth of it is, you are just one decision away from changing your life for the better. You are one choice away from doing what you say you desire, but, it's going to require an action. We all have areas in our lives that make us cringe. The thought of doing something to change them seems almost impossible or far too hard to do on your own. The truth of it is though, that you weren't made to do it on your own. The one keeping you from doing these things isn't your God who conquered the grave and freely gives all you need for life and Godliness. No, it's a defeated enemy keeping you from changing your life for the better, and his power is only as great as He's able to make you believe it is.

Friends, lets rise up and start doing. Not to add to our salvation, but instead to live out our salvation. Christianity will thrive and grow when we start doing what we know we ought to do.

"But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves."
James 1:22

Let me tell you a little secret...
If you say you want a stronger prayer life, then friend, it's time to get up and pray. If you say you want a more consistent time in the word, then friend, it's time to make an appointment and keep it.
You say you want more exercise? Then friend, it's time to get up and go. You say you want to learn something new, then lets get learning.

There is a long history in Christian living of those who radically changed the world for Jesus. I know It's easy to think that they were born with something special, something different, something we can't have. Friends, that's a lie that we all need to stop believing. The same God that worked through them is ready and waiting to work through you. He's got places He wants to take you, things He wants to teach you, ways He wants to use you, but are we going to allow defeat to overwhelm us? Are we going to instead wallow in constant guilt of not doing what we know we ought to do?

"Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do its to him it is sin."
James 4:17

Today you are just one choice away from doing what you say you desire.
